Australia has come a long way in a short time. A land of people who were invaded by the Europeans, are now part of a Nation who live together as one. Countries once fought against are now allies and trade partners. Immigrants to this land are now part of a magnificent tapestry that forms Australian society. It is the only country in the world that gained independent government without a war.
What was once discarded as not desirable, and of little use other than for a penal colony, has now grown to be one of the best places to live on this planet.
What was once a punishment to be sent to, is now considered one of the top destinations in the world.
Australian's for the most part are no different from other western civizations, having the same performing arts and music likes and dislikes. Most of inland Australia still encompasses many of the same qualities and characteristics of colonial Australia. City life consists of the hussel and bussel of a working day, and a vibrant and exciting nightlife that can be equalled to anywhere in the world. Combine this with a diverse multicultural society, and you are bound to feel welcome and at home. Australian's are known worldwide for their hospitality and mateship.
Strong community relations have been formed over the years, and these hands of friendship eventually spread overseas, and to visitors to our shores. It's not uncommon for conversations to be struck up with visitors upon hearing the visitors accent. Many think that this bond of mateship has evolved from a harsh past when it was important to rely on your mates and neighbours. This was more than evident in war time, when strong bonds were formed between soldiers, and friendships were struck with soldiers overseas and civilians who corresponded with them during their service.
Australian's respect their diverse multicultural heritage, and are generally very open minded, which is evident with events such as the Chinese New Year and the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Australian's just like to make the most out of life!
