In 1990 the Victorian Football League was changed to the Australian Football League (AFL).
AFL is one of the biggest parts of Australian sport and culture, especially across Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. It’s fast, physical and uniquely Australian, with a style of play that blends athleticism, strategy and a strong sense of community. For many Australians, AFL is more than a game. It’s weekend tradition, local identity and a shared passion that brings people together across cities, towns and regional communities.
The AFL season runs through autumn and winter, with teams representing major cities and regions. Fans follow their clubs closely, filling stadiums, watching matches at pubs and gathering with friends and family to cheer on their side. The atmosphere is energetic and welcoming, with traditions like club songs, rivalries and match-day rituals forming part of the experience. The AFL Grand Final is one of the biggest events in the country, celebrated nationwide.
Local footy is just as important. Community clubs across Australia play a huge role in social life, offering junior programs, senior teams and weekend matches that bring people together. Kids grow up kicking a footy at school, in backyards and at local ovals, and many families spend weekends at community grounds supporting their teams. It’s a sport that encourages teamwork, resilience and connection.
AFL also reflects the Australian lifestyle. It’s active, social and outdoors-focused, with matches played on large open fields that suit the country’s wide spaces. People enjoy the sense of belonging that comes with supporting a club, whether it’s a local team or an AFL powerhouse. The culture around AFL is friendly, passionate and deeply woven into everyday life.
Understanding AFL gives travellers and newcomers a clear window into Australian culture. It highlights the country’s community spirit, love of sport and the traditions that shape weekends across cities, coastal towns and regional communities.
