It is estimated that over 500,000 winter sports enthusiasts head for the Australian ski fields each winter.

The Ski Season in Australia runs from June - September.

There are resorts scattered all over the Alps in Victoria & New South Wales.  Snow in Australia is not as reliable as snow in other countries and it's common for one year to be a shocker and the next year is a great season. It's always wise to be prepared and have other activities available to still have a fun time.

Victoria

Most of the commercial ski resorts are located in the Australian Alps on the Victorian and NSW border. This is the only area of the mainland that regularly receives a sufficiently deep snowpack for snowsports.

In Victoria there are 3 major ski resorts and 4 minor ski resorts, and many non-commercial ski resorts used for cross country skiing.

New South Wales

On the NSW side of the Australian Alps, there are 2 major and 2 minor ski resorts.

Charlotte Passis the only snowbound resort in Australia and to get to the ski resort you have to use the oversnow transport from Perisher Valley. It holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in Australia,  -23 degrees Celsius.

Perisher is an amalgamation of four separate ski areas and covers the largest area of the Australian resorts.  The resorts are interconnected and are Perisher, Smiggin Holes, Blue Cow and Guthega, and combined provide Perisher with the most lifts. If there is adequate snow cover skiers and boarders can ski and board from one end to the other.

Selwyn Snowfields is an ideal place for beginners to intermediates.  It offers skiing and boarding more protected from the elements than other resorts.

Getting to the bottom of Thredbo often depends on artificial snow. The bottom is below the natural snowline making it the greatest vertical of any Australian resort.  Thredbo has a great village atmosphere and busy nightlife.

Tasmania

Ben Lomond is located at the base of the lift system and is Tasmania's premier ski resort, offering stunning views and a full range of facilities for winter enjoyment. There are 6 surface lifts at Ben Lomond (3 platter and 3 T-bars). Wide open runs to suit all standards

Mt Mawson is located within the Mount Field National Park and about 1&1/2 hours drive from Hobart at an altitude of about 1250m and usually gets fairly consistent snow falls during winter resulting sufficient cover for downhill skiing from mid July to mid September. Slopes for beginners & experts

Cross-country: Popular at Ben Lomond

Much of the interior of Tasmania is high country, with rocky mountains and large snow fields. Snow is pretty much guaranteed during winter and occasionally during summer. There are two ski resorts in Tasmania, Ben Lomond & Mt Mawson in the Mt Field National Park.
