Historic Sites

For those interested in history and culture, South East Tasmania has plenty to offer. Today it's open as a tourist attraction so visitors can explore some of the original buildings where prisoners were held and learn more about Australia's past. Don't miss out on visiting the Coal Mines Historic Site either; here you can learn about how coal was mined during colonial times and see how life had changed since then.

Experience Nature

If nature is more your cup of tea, then South East Tasmania is definitely worth checking out! Take a stroll through Dove Lake National Park and admire its tranquil beauty or go bird watching at Little Swanport Reserve where many species of native birds can be found. For an unforgettable experience, head over to Maria Island National Park where you can observe rare wildlife like Tasmanian Devils and Eastern Quolls up close! During the summer Hobart has the most hours of sunlight of any city in Australia, with up to 15.2 hrs on the Summer solstice. Just think how full your days can be!

A Penal Colony

Hobart was founded in 1803 as a penal colony at Risdon Cove on the eastern shores of the Derwent River, and is Australia's second oldest capital city after Sydney. In 1804 it was moved to its present site at Sullivans Cove in Hobart. Hobart was initially known as Hobart Town or Hobarton and was named after the Colonial Secretary, Lord Hobart. Hobart Town became a city on 21 August 1842, and was renamed Hobart in 1875.

Hobart Seaport

Hobart is a busy seaport and serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.
