Toowoomba - The Garden City

Toowoomba, otherwise known as 'The Garden City, is a picturesque mountain city located 125km west of Queensland's capital city Brisbane in the region of Darling Downs. Also referred to as the capital of the Darling Downs. It is the 16th largest city in Australia, the 6th largest in Queensland and the most populous inland city in the country after the national capital of Canberra.

Toowoomba is situated on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, around 700m above sea level, and has more than 150 public parks and gardens. East Creek and West Creek are waterways that flow together just north of the CBD to form Gowrie Creek.

The City of Toowoomba was originally named "The Swamp" & the theory is that Toowoomba is the pronunciation of the Aboriginal word for 'The Swamp'.

Spring in the Darling Downs is a glorious time of the year, but Toowoomba is a beautiful place anytime of the year. Toowoomba hosts the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers each September and national championship sports events for mountain biking and motocross. The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers features many events including a floral street parades, live music concerts, arts and crafts, floral displays, garden tours, food and wine festivals, and a garden competitions.

Toowoomba has a great selection of restaurants, cafés and eateries throughout the city. The urban laneway cafe trend of Melbourne, is also growing increasing popular in Toowoomba.

Toowoomba has a warm humid subtropical climate with warm summers & cool winters. Toowoomba is considered cooler than many other towns and cities in Queensland. The city gets it's fair shair of sunshine, receiving 107.2 clear days annually.


Transport

There is a suburban bus service operated by Bus Queensland Toowoomba throughout the city. There are frequent inter-city bus services between Toowoomba and Brisbane, and other centres operated by Greyhound Australia and Murrays. Toowoomba station has a twice-weekly rail service from Brisbane to Charleville and return on Queensland Rail's The Westlander. Toowoomba is served by Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, which is serviced by QantasLink, Airnorth and Regional Express Airlines, with flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Townsville and destinations west of the city.
