From abandoned warehouses to old hospitals, Australia is home to some truly spooky locations – let’s explore a few!

Melbourne Gaol - Victoria

Another Australian site with plenty of ghostly inhabitants. Built back in 1842, Melbourne Gaol was once home to all sorts of criminals from petty thieves to infamous bushrangers such as Ned Kelly. In recent years it has become known as a popular haunt for paranormal investigators due to its long history and reports from visitors about hearing strange noises and seeing eerie shadows lurking around corners late at night.

Port Arthur Penitentiary – Tasmania

The Port Arthur Penitentiary is one of the most notorious haunted houses in Australia. Built in 1830 as a prison, the facility operated until 1877, when it became a psychiatric hospital. During its time as a penitentiary, it was known for its harsh treatment and high mortality rate. Visitors have reported strange occurrences such as cold spots, disembodied voices and footsteps, and sightings of ghostly figures.

Aradale Mental Asylum – Victoria

The Aradale Mental Asylum was opened in 1865 as an experimental mental hospital. The facility was notorious for its cruel treatments such as electric shock therapy and lobotomies. Although the building closed in 1998, visitors still report strange occurrences such as unexplained noises and sightings of ghostly figures roaming the hallways. It is now open to tourists who want to explore this creepy location and experience its haunted past firsthand.

Old Tailem Town - South Australia

Old Tailem Town is an abandoned pioneer town located near the Murray River in South Australia that dates back to 1866. It was once home to over 500 people but has since been deserted after floods destroyed much of it in 1940. Behind its unassuming facade hides some chilling secrets – it’s believed that this former pioneer settlement is home to dozens of ghosts! Visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices whispering from empty rooms and feeling cold spots where no logical source can be found. It’s definitely a must-visit destination if you’re looking for some spooky thrills!

The Monte Cristo Homestead – Junee, New South Wales

The Monte Cristo Homestead in NSW is widely considered to be one of the most haunted places in Australia. It was built in 1885 and has since been passed down through five generations of the Crawley family. The house is said to be inhabited by the spirit of former owner, Mrs Elizabeth Crawley, who passed away under mysterious circumstances in 1961. In addition to being one of the oldest homesteads in Australia, it also boasts its fair share of paranormal activity. Visitors have reported hearing footsteps and disembodied voices throughout the house as well as sightings of a woman wearing period clothing wandering its corridors.

Robe House – Robe, South Australia

Robe House was built in 1844 and served as a schoolhouse until it was acquired by Dr John Briggs in 1856 and converted into his private residence. It is said that Dr Briggs' ghost still lingers within the walls of Robe House today; visitors have reported seeing apparitions and hearing strange noises coming from inside the building at night. Additionally, many people have claimed to feel an oppressive presence when entering the house which could be attributed to Dr Briggs' wife who passed away soon after he moved into Robe House with her.

Old Beechworth Gaol – Beechworth, Victoria

The Old Beechworth Gaol was constructed in 1865 and remained operational until 1924 when it was decommissioned due to overcrowding. Since then, it has become known as one of Victoria's most haunted locations with reports of eerie laughter echoing through its walls and strange shadows moving around inside the building at night. The gaol is also said to be home to hundreds of spirits including those of former inmates and wardens who were killed while serving their sentence here. There have even been reports of visitors being touched by unseen hands while exploring this spooky location!
